We are just days away from the most anticipated series return of the year. It’s been a long and difficult wait since Season 4 of When Calls the Heart wrapped up on March 1st, but finally on April 5th, we will join the good folks of Hope Valley for the Season 5 Australian premiere, exclusive to ACCTV.
If you’re a late-comer, here’s a quick catch up. When Calls the Heart tells the charming and captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to life in high society, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small mining town where life is simple, but full of challenges.
Elizabeth charmed everyone in Coal Valley, except (at first) Constable Jack Thornton (Australian actor, Daniel Lissing) who believed Thatcher’s wealthy father had doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned by the town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Naturally enough, his coolness dissolved as Elizabeth’s plucky strength and determination piqued his interest and warmed his heart.
Lori Loughlin (Full House) plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, was killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women found their faith tested when they had to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads.
As the series progressed Coal Valley became Hope Valley when the mine closed down and we’ve met new characters including cold and cynical former mine owner Henry Gowan, mysterious Bill Avery, flamboyant actress Rosemary, and kind, sweet mill owner Lee. And of course, like has turned to love for Jack and Elizabeth. Despite an often rocky road, in Season 4, Jack finally popped the question, but then, Jack’s work as a Mounted Policeman took him off to the Northern Territories to serve and protect.
So here we are, ready for Season 5! Jack has gone and Elizabeth patiently awaits his return, so they may begin their life together. His dangerous job has always caused her angst and maybe now she really does have something to be concerned about.
In the season premiere, seen only on ACCTV, Elizabeth’s sister, Julie, visits Hope Valley in her quest to become a teacher and Lee is made acting Sheriff when Abigail and Bill leave town to testify in Gowen’s trial.
The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West and originally created by Michael Landon Jr, and does have the rare qualities that make it entertaining enough for the whole family to enjoy. The wholesome nature of the characters and moral dilemmas faced each week have a lovely old-fashioned feel and When Calls the Heart has proved very popular with ACCTV viewers both young and old. This is an ACCTV must watch!
