A Different Way to ‘Get Fit’ This Summer

Well, it’s ‘that’ time of the year again. Do you know what I’m talking about? ‘That’ language starts getting thrown around.

Summer shred. Bikini bodies. Beach booty.

I’m not sure how many times this week I’ve heard those terms in the gym or seen summer body fitness promotions pop up on my social media feeds. It just makes me SO frustrated.

Now I’m a passionate advocate for health and wellbeing after spending years on my own journey of extremely poor health – physically, emotionally and spiritually, but the guilt tactics the health and fitness industries use to get us through the gym doors and buying ‘this and that product’ just breaks my heart.

Why? Because YOU were made for freedom. And a process motivated by guilt, shame or fear will never bring about the freedom you crave, the true freedom you were made for. So what’s your motivation to get healthy and be fit? If it’s guilt or shame, your journey is going to be joyless and soul destroying.

If that sounds a little dramatic, that’s because it is. Trust me, I’ve been there…

We think that getting to our ‘ideal weight’ or size X will bring us the freedom and happiness we crave. But if we get there and the journey has been driven by fear, or guilt or shame, the arrival at that destination is an empty one. Not only that, if we actually do arrive at our perceived ideal of healthy and fit, too often fear continually whispers that we must stay there ‘or else’ we’ll be a failure, hopeless etc. etc.

But it doesn’t have to be like this. We have power and choice over our perception and experience. Once we become aware of a process that is not positive or healthy for us (in body, mind or spirit), we have the opportunity to experience it differently.

This thought just smashes it for me – whenever Jesus initiated positive life change and real freedom, His method was never by using guilt or shame – it was LOVE. Not only that, Jesus rarely addressed just one area of a person’s wellbeing. Nope, He got in there and set them free; physically, emotionally and spiritually.

So what if your health and fitness journey was motivated by so much more than working for that ‘summer body’?

What if you were motivated by LOVE?

Motivated by a love so great from your Heavenly Father that you know you are so loved by Him and created with a unique purpose to impact the world, SO THAT you love and care for yourself to enable you to fulfil this.

Motivated by a love for the people and world around you and you know that being at your best means you can powerfully and effectively share Jesus that way only you can.

So from here I want you to ponder, what’s my motivation? I encourage you to seek God for revelation for your health and wellbeing. He wants in on that journey. He’s the best personal trainer there is out there; for body, mind and spirit. Oh and He will never make you feel guilty for eating that slice of cake….He’s just cheering you on from the sidelines as you do your very best. What a magnificent thought that is.
